PDF.ai alternative: who should pick which, and where UniqAI loses
PDF.ai has OCR, large files and an API.
Updated
Why do people look for a PDF.ai alternative?
Three reasons come up.
The free plan is small. PDF.ai's Hobby plan allows 1 upload and 100 questions a month. That is enough to try it, not enough to read a few documents a week.
A PDF-only bill. Pro is $10 a month billed yearly, so $120 a year, for a tool that does PDFs. If you already pay for a chat assistant or an image tool, that is another subscription.
Models you cannot name. PDF.ai labels its models only "Basic" and "Advanced". Some people want to know which model reads their file, and to pick it.
If none of these applies to you, PDF.ai may be the right tool. Below is a fair look at who should choose what. UniqAI loses on several points, and we say so plainly.
How PDF.ai and UniqAI compare
| Plan | Price | Uploads and questions | File size and OCR |
|---|---|---|---|
| PDF.ai Hobby | $0, free forever | 1 upload and 100 questions a month | 10 MB; OCR 2 pages per file |
| PDF.ai Pro | $10/mo billed yearly; monthly billing price not read | 100 uploads and 1,000 questions a month | 50 MB; OCR 10 pages per file |
| PDF.ai Ultimate | $20/user/mo billed yearly; monthly billing price not read | Unlimited uploads and questions | 50 MB; OCR 50 pages per file |
| PDF.ai Enterprise | $30/user/mo billed yearly; monthly billing price not read | Unlimited uploads and questions | 100 MB; OCR 100 pages per file |
| UniqAI | Weekly $6.99, Annual Pro $59.99/year, Annual Pro+ $119.99/year | 30 Gems on sign-up; PDF chat from 1 Gem a message; up to 4 files per message; Compare needs a paid plan | About 5.7 MB per PDF; text PDFs only (no OCR) |
Prices checked 2026-11-03 on PDF.ai's pricing page (source below). The page shows yearly billing, so PDF.ai prices are "billed yearly" and the monthly-billing price was not read. The fetch tool returned nothing for that page, so we read it in a browser.

Who should pick PDF.ai?
Pick PDF.ai if one of these describes you.
- Your files are scans. PDF.ai has OCR, up to a page cap per file: 2, 10, 50 or 100 pages depending on the plan. UniqAI has no OCR at all.
- Your files are big. Its limits run from 10 MB to 100 MB. Ours is about 5.7 MB.
- You ask a lot of questions. Ultimate and Enterprise list unlimited uploads and questions. UniqAI meters every message in Gems.
- You need an API or embeds. The page lists an API hub (Parse, Extract, Chat), a white-labeled PDF embed, a Chrome extension and team invites. Which feature belongs to which plan is not clear from the page, so check before you buy. UniqAI has none of these.
PDF.ai's page also lists AI Agents, Capture & ask and free PDF tools such as merge, split and compress.
Who should pick UniqAI?
Pick UniqAI if these matter more to you.
- One subscription for more than PDFs. The same plan covers chat, images and video.
- Models you name. You choose per message. The fast tier is 1 Gem (GPT-4o mini, Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite, DeepSeek V4 Flash). The smart tier is 5 Gems (Claude Haiku 4.5, GPT-5, Claude Sonnet 4.6, Gemini 2.5 Pro, Grok 4.3).
- A visible cost. One message costs the same however many files you attach.
- Private page tools. Merge, split, rotate and reorder run free in your browser and the files never leave your device.
- Actions beyond chat. Summarize, translate, explain, tables to CSV, study notes and compare. Every answer has Copy and Download .md.
On price, the two are not like for like. PDF.ai Pro is $10 a month billed yearly, which is $120 a year (10 x 12), with a cap of 1,000 questions a month. UniqAI Annual Pro is $59.99 a year, but Gems are metered, so heavy use can run out. Annual Pro+ is $119.99 a year.
Where does UniqAI lose?
Four places.
No OCR. UniqAI reads the text layer of a PDF. A scan gives no usable text, and the model is told to say so. PDF.ai reads scans up to a page cap.
Smaller files. About 5.7 MB per PDF and up to 4 files per message, against 10 to 100 MB at PDF.ai.
No unlimited tier. Gems run out. PDF.ai lists unlimited uploads and questions on Ultimate and Enterprise.
No API. PDF.ai lists one. We do not.
The free plan also reads about 8,000 input tokens a message, so a long document may be cut, and Compare needs a paid plan. We would rather you know that before you sign up.
How do I test the two before paying?
Use one real PDF, the kind you read most, and write down three questions you already know the answers to.
- One lookup. A figure or a date in one place.
- One sum. A total that needs several lines added up.
- One gap. Ask about something the file does not say. A good tool says so. A weak one invents an answer.
If your file is a scan, run it through PDF.ai's free Hobby plan first and note how many pages its OCR cap allows. Then try the same file in UniqAI: you will see at once whether the text is readable. Check the file size against both limits too. Pick the tool whose limit does not get in the way of your files, whatever the price.
