Chat with PDF: ask your file questions
Chat with PDF means asking a model questions about your file.
Updated
How it works
Add your PDF
Open the tool (it may ask you to sign in) and drop in one text PDF.
Ask a question
Type it the way you'd ask a colleague. The answer streams in, and the cost is shown first.
Follow up and check
Ask follow-ups, then open the cited page to confirm anything that matters.
How do I chat with a PDF here?
Add the file, pick the Chat action and type a question. The model reads the text layer of the PDF and answers in the chat. Follow-up questions work, so you can start broad and narrow down.
When the text itself shows page numbers, answers cite them like "(p. 4)". If the document has no printed page numbers, don't expect citations. For a longer walkthrough, see how to chat with a PDF.
Questions to ask
What is this document, who wrote it, and what is it for? Answer in three sentences.
Use the tool aboveWhat is the total amount due, and by what date? Quote the line where you found it.
Use the tool aboveWhich section covers cancellation or termination? Summarize what it says and give the page.
Use the tool aboveList every action I have to take after reading this, with any deadline next to each.
Use the tool aboveQuote the exact sentence that supports your last answer, and tell me if the document doesn't actually say it.
Use the tool aboveHow do I get a good answer?
Ask for one thing at a time. "What are the payment terms?" beats "Tell me everything important."
Name what you want back: a list, a date, a quote, two sentences. And ask for the supporting line. Models can sound sure while being wrong, so a quote you can find on the page is worth more than a confident paragraph.
If an answer looks thin, say what's missing and ask again. Every message re-sends the whole file, so keep the chat focused rather than asking ten loose questions.
What it will not do
- It can't read scanned PDFs or photos of pages. With no text layer you get "No text found".
- Password-protected files must be re-saved without the password first.
- AI jobs take about 5.7 MB per PDF. Very long documents get cut or refused, so pick a page range.
- It won't edit the PDF, fill forms or sign anything.
- Answers can be wrong. Check the cited page.
What does it cost, and what leaves my device?
Chat runs on GPT-4o mini by default, at 1 Gem per message. New accounts start with 30 Gems, and you can change the model in the tool. See pricing for packs and plans.
The PDF is uploaded to the model provider you picked, and sent again with each message. Don't use it on a file that shouldn't leave your device. If you only need to cut pages first, the split tool runs locally and uploads nothing.
Questions about Chat with PDF
Can I chat with a PDF for free?
Each message costs 1 Gem on the default GPT-4o mini model. New accounts start with 30 Gems, so you can try it without buying anything. Smart models cost 5 Gems per message, and you see the cost before you send.
Why does the chat say no text found?
Your PDF is probably a scan or a photo of a page, so there's no text for the model to read. There's no OCR here. Try a version where you can select and copy the text.
Does the AI always give the page number?
No. It cites pages like (p. 4) only when the text itself shows page numbers. Even then, open that page and check it, because a model can point to the wrong one.
How long can the PDF be?
About 5.7 MB per file. A PDF counts as roughly 6,000 input tokens, so very long documents get cut or refused. Choose a page range and only those pages leave your device.
Can I ask about two PDFs at once?
Chat takes one file. To look at two documents together, use Compare PDFs, which needs exactly two files and a paid plan, and runs on Claude Sonnet 4.6.
